Pro video accessory maker Atomos today unveiled two new portable touchscreen HD recorders namely the Ninja and Samurai. The Atomos Ninja is a portable touchscreen professional 10bit HD recorder, monitor and playback device that captures pristine video and audio direct from any camera with a clean HDMI output. It encodes in real-time to the visually-lossless Apple ProRes format, onto low-cost, removable 2.5-inch hard disk drive or SSD. The Ninja supports instant on-board playback or live monitoring in a self-contained, battery-powered unit. The drive holder can handle up to 750GB hard drives for studio work, or users can swap to an SSD for situations where recording is subject to vibration (rough locations, aerial shooting, etc).

The Atomos Samurai is a similar device with HD/SD-SDI support, a 5-inch (800 x 480) touchscreen and multi-camera support. The touchscreen display features SDI loop-through to allow another monitor to be attached, and two Samurais can be gen-locked to provide 3D support. Both Ninja and Samurai come equipped with Firewire 800, USB 2.0 port, 3 outputs to computers and a strong aluminum body. The Atomos Ninja and Samurai are priced at $995 and $1,495, respectively.
